NYPD and New York City Police Foundation Unveil New Crime Stoppers Mobile App

From Security Magazine: The NYPD launched a free smartphone app for use on Apple iOS and Android devices to anonymously report crimes to the Crime Stoppers program. The new CS-NYC mobile app allows investigators to more easily receive quality tips with attached images, documents, and videos. Other benefits include the ability for the investigator to engage in safe, private two-way dialog with the tipster—a new feature that was previously impossible through text messaging alone.

Our take: Technology is changing the way criminals are committing crimes, so it’s encouraging to see first responders using technology to collect information about crime and interact with tipsters. Mobile apps may make it easier for some members of the public to interact with the police; especially those who don’t feel comfortable texting with an officer.

Everbridge Partners With RiskBand To Deliver Workplace Security

From Security Informed: Everbridge, Inc., a pioneer in critical event management and enterprise safety software applications to help keep people safe and businesses running, announced a partnership with RiskBand, a provider of wearable, live-monitored safety devices for organizations and their workers. The alliance is part of Everbridge’s strategy to reach the broadest set of workers, including those that may not always have ready access to a cell phone, such as a hospitality employee, in-home healthcare provider, or lone worker in the field.

With the additional modality and simple access of the RiskBand wearable device, Everbridge is expanding its addressable market for protecting employees regardless of their physical location, whether inside the office, working remotely, or traveling the globe.

Our take: Your employees aren’t always in the office. Sometimes they’re traveling, and sometimes they’re remote or working in the field. No matter where they are, it’s your responsibility to make sure they’re safe on the job. Wearables like Riskband are a great step towards ensuring the safety of employees who aren’t working in a central location.

Checkpoint Systems Launches G40 EAS Antenna Designed To Tackle Theft in Retail Stores

From Security Informed: Checkpoint Systems has announced the launch of the G40, a small footprint acrylic antenna specifically designed to tackle theft in convenience stores. The compact RF-based, G40 EAS antenna covers areas where installation of traditional EAS proves challenging, maximizing space for product displays, delivering accurate detection between pedestals while back-shielding against false alarms caused by customers walking behind the antenna.

Our take: Retail is traditionally a difficult industry to secure, after all, shoppers are walking in and out all the time, and that foot traffic brings risk with it. Additionally, the retail industry is seeing a rise in the growth of small format stores. Innovations like this antenna allow small store owners to do business more securely.

Patriot One Acquires Artificial Intelligence (AI) Company XTRACT Technologies Inc.

From Globe Newswire: Patriot One Technologies Inc., the developer of the PATSCAN Multi-Sensor Covert Weapon Detection Platform, recently acquired XTRACT Technologies, Inc. The transaction follows the success of an ongoing collaborative project between the two firms that was announced in late July 2019. The acquisition is part of an ongoing strategic initiative by Patriot One to bring together leading-edge technologies and services that will enhance the power of its PATSCAN Platform, which offers a layered, multi-sensor approach to concealed threat and disturbance detection.

Our take: The PATSCAN Platform is a ground-breaking technology that detects firearms by scanning for the specific alloys used to make a specific gun model. This technology, which can be concealed in a front desk or a wall panel, is able to detect hidden firearms that have been disassembled and which may be entering a site piece by piece. Artificial Intelligence can only improve this technology, so it will be interesting to see how this merger will improve PATSCAN and Patriot One’s other offerings.
