Meet Circadian Risk at IACLEA 2023

Heads of college and university security are meeting this month to discuss the issues facing security in higher education, and Circadian Risk is proud to join them.

The International Association of Campus and Law Enforcement Officers and Administrators (IACLEA) will hold its annual conference and exposition from June 27 to 30 in Orlando, Florida. The conference is the premier event for police and public safety leaders on higher education campuses, and features more than 50 educational sessions with experts in the industry, a vendor showcase of all of the latest products and services, and a gala to honor 2023’s award recipients.

A focus on mental health and safety

Higher education has faced a significant number of security challenges in the last year, from slashed campus safety budgets to an increase in ransomware attacks on colleges and universities. That’s on top of evergreen college safety risks, such as substance abuse, sexual assault, cyberbullying and hazing.

However, one of the top conversations at IACLEA last year was about mental health on campus. A recent report backs up those concerns. According to the annual Healthy Minds Survey, which received responses from 96,000 U.S. students across 133 campuses during the 2021–22 academic year, 44% reported symptoms of depression, 37% said they experienced anxiety, and 15% said they have seriously considered suicide. These numbers represent the highest rate of mental history in the survey’s 15-year history. The National Education Association (NEA) has referred to it as a “mental health crisis on college campuses.”

We expect to hear much more about mental health this year. There’s likely to be discussion of the mental health of crime victims, as well as conversations about the mental health of perpetrators.
